One of the Russian networks selling household appliances began offering Starlink satellite Internet terminals, which do not work in Russia. The Insider correspondent, who called the store under the guise of a buyer, was told that this equipment is being bought, among other things, by employees of the Russian special services.
Representatives of the store who answered the calls confirmed that the terminal bought from them could neither be registered nor used in Russia, and advised to go to Europe or China to register the equipment. There is also no purchase guarantee.
When asked why they should sell these terminals in Russia at all, one of the interlocutors answered: “Someone is buying. FSB agents, people who travel to other countries.” The second representative of the store advised using the Starlink terminal, for example, on a yacht outside of Russia. He also acknowledged that the terminals are bought by "special services and tourists, half and half." To the question: "Tourists to Ukraine?" – the interlocutor replied: "And these guys too."
The trading network website offers terminals of two models: Starlink V1 and Starlink V2 at a price of 659,000 rubles ($8,600) apiece. In the USA such equipment costs up to $2500.
Starlink is a global satellite internet system launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX. After the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, Musk began to supply Starlink terminals there to ensure uninterrupted communications in the conditions of hostilities.
