The Odintsovo City Court of the Moscow Region sentenced the former deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia Valery Maksimenko to nine years in prison on charges of taking a bribe and abuse of power. This is reported by TASS, referring to the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation.

The court also imposed a fine of 43 million 378 thousand rubles on the former deputy head of the Federal Penitentiary Service. In addition, he was deprived of the right to hold positions in the public service for a period of 11 years.

According to investigators, in 2018-2019, Maksimenko organized the illegal conclusion of obviously unfeasible state contracts for the repair of facilities of the Federal Penitentiary Service under the target program "Development of the penitentiary system for 2018-2026".

Investigators believe that it was Maksimenko's fault that the state program was disrupted, and 19 construction projects were not put into operation, which caused damage to the state in the amount of 330 million rubles.

On November 27, 2020, the Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Maksimenko on charges of abuse of office. The damage from his actions was estimated at 189 million rubles. He himself pleaded not guilty.
